Wedded Bliss Part 1

Michelle and Paul's wedding mice
10th August 2012
I consider it a great honour when I'm asked to make wee creatures to perch on the top of a wedding cake. To be a part of someone's special day is a big thing, even if it's only a small part, and I love working with people to come up with just the perfect design.  I've clocked up quite a few now, so I'm going to take a look at some of the ones I've made over a couple of posts.

These mice, for Michelle and Paul's wedding, were dressed to match the bride and groom's outfits. I worked from photos given to me by Michelle and Paul separately, as they weren't allowed to see the other's outfits before the big day itself. And when the mice arrived, I had to email both Michelle and Paul separate photos of their mice, and not the two of them together!

I created a millefiori cane for Paul's stripy trousers, and for the ruffles in the bodice of Michelle's beautiful dress, I pressed a needle into the clay, and for the skirt, I rolled a long thin sheet of the honey coloured clay, which I gathered into folds along one edge to create the a full shape.

The Happy Couple

As I only make wee creatures, this means I get some wonderfully unusual requests for cake toppers. Like this Mole and Marmoset couple, who will be gracing Claire's wedding cake in September. Working out the engineering to make the Marmoset cling to the Mole was lots of fun (the Marmoset's tail is strengthened with wire and sits on the ground).

Mole and Marmoset Bride and Groom
Moles have appeared quite regularly on the top of wedding cakes, but perhaps this is one of the strangest pairings I've been asked to make - a Mole Bride wearing Vivienne Westwood shoes and carrying one of her famous Orbs, paired with a T-Rex Soldier!

And then there are the cake toppers that have a lot of sentimental meaning to the bride and groom, like this Jelly Baby Couple I made at Neil's request...(I won't tell you how many Jelly Babies I had to eat, purely for research purposes, of course).

And these two little Octopi are one of my favourites, simply because of their goofy expressions :) Again, getting the legs to intertwine naturally was a bit of a challenge (and a very fun one at that!)

Love Octopi Couple

And to finish off the wedding show for this time, I'd like to introduce The Totoros, based on Studio Ghibli's film, My Neighbour Totoro. I watched that film over Christmas, and loved it!

My Wife Totoro

It's been wonderful to work with people and their imaginations to create something truly special and unique. And one thing I've learned is that pretty much anything is possible! Thanks to everyone who has invited the wee creatures to be part of their special day!

If you're looking for something a bit unusual for your wedding, drop me a line and we'll see what we can cook up between us :)

  1. Hi Kirsten, just found your website via Twitter and I just love your little 'folk' - they are really fab! I will pass your website onto my son and his partner as they get married next year and we were only discussing at the weekend about what to put on top of their cake!

    1. Thank you very much - yes, they do like perching on top of wedding cakes, and quite a few of them have found their way to the top of wedding cheese cakes - a perfect match!
